This page was almost titled Coiled Cord – because it’s short and to the point. But Girts got cold feet about it. Too boring, he said. Makes the pieces sound dull, he said. Well, they’re neither of those, so here we are.
Like most things, the start of this journey was fairly mundane: we needed somewhere to put the TV remote without it slipping off the table or getting hidden under books. So Girts said “you’ve got a sewing machine, can’t you rustle something up from a piece of suede or something?” I didn’t have any suede, but I had a length of decorative rope left over from making something else. And that was that. The first bowl took shape.
As often happens, one thing led to another and before long we had to get a replacement sewing machine – an industrial one – to take the thickness and toughness of the rope.
Now I make many other items from rope. I also work silk threads, sari silk, fine lawn cotton and other decorations into the pieces. Some are finished with tassels, some with decorative knots, and some with porcelain buttons made by Girts. Full circle, you could say.
Any of these items can be bought direct from me at one of the Craft Shows or Open Studio events we’ll be taking part in. Or you can contact me through our contact page on this site.
